What you don’t know, …can hurt you

Securing your private data is critical to eliminating risk both personally and professionally. If you’ve ever had to rebuild your credit you’ll appreciate the need to take data protection seriously. An institution that fails to apply strong security measures towards protecting client data can suffer catastrophic financial losses due to fines imposed by regulators, courts and governments as well as the loss of revenue from an exodus of clients due to loss of faith.

This June 5 millions of people around the world are taking part in an online initiative to take back our privacy in a campaign called Reset the Net (resetthenet.org). I encourage you all to take a moment and check it out.

You will find that my website, garydavis.ca has the RTN splash-screen enabled for the campaign, and I have committed to ensure my site uses at the least SSL before the end of the month. Additionally, I’ve taken steps to ‘harden’ (secure) my edge servers, personal computers and my mobile devices using free apps such as SecureText and Tor, in addition to my private anonymous VPN connections that I already use. Ironically, this blog post is not yet SSL encrypted, but it will be.
